I’m looking at the parallels between 2 Samuel 7 and 1 Chronicles 17 for the sermon this week. When you put those two chapters right next to one another, they show mostly a word-for-word agreement, but there are some minor differences, reminiscent of the parallel account variations in the synoptics. You always wonder why. Especially since Ezra (writing Chronicles) surely had a copy of Samuel-Kings, in addition to the other books he was working from.
On thing that suggests itself to explain the slight variances is the gap in time. The court chronicler in David’s time who recorded the events in 2 Samuel 7 live in the 900’s B.C. Ezra was writing 400 years later, after the exile. Maybe Ezra was doing some “New King James” kind of rephrasing in places.
